  1. Sadly, no. Chile sounds like they haven’t even called for international aid yet, though, and that the NGOs on the ground are prepared. I would think a long term commitment to a Haitian organization (i.e. X dollars a month) would be the ideal contribution, since it provides a sustainable income.

  2. Any recommendations for charities in Chile? Haiti Partners was a helpful suggestion.

  3. *sigh*, to sleep perchance to dream….

Your tongue in cheek comment reminds me of some video footage from a charity school for very, very poor, bright kids in Arusha, Tanzania. A volunteer lined up some of the 8 year olds and got them talking. The number of kids who said they wanted to be accountants was immensely touching.

While sad for first world kids, who we deem should enjoy a ‘real childhood’, I thought this might be a good choice for a bright 8-year old who had only one chance at a future that is better than hauling mud in tanzanite mines.

The school is the School of St Jude, run by an energetic and capable Australian, Gemma Sisia. She’s already got 1,300 kids and plans to grow by 200 a year for the next 4 years, when the oldest class will matriculate. Then she hopes the sponsors will see ther kids through unversity in Africa.
